STD Testing Q & A

by Hari Polavarapu, MD

What is an STD?

STDs are infections transmitted from one partner to another during sexual activity, which includes oral sex and intercourse. There are many types of STDs, including:

  • HIV
  • Syphilis
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)

What is STD testing like?

The type of testing required for an STD depends on the type of infection. Some forms, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, require urine testing. Other types of STD may require a blood test. Depending on your symptoms and sexual activity, Dr. Polavarapu may:

  • Check a blood sample
  • Test your urine
  • Obtain a swab of the inside of your mouth
  • Obtain a swab from the genitals and urethra for males and cervix for females
  • Obtain a swab of discharge from sores in your genital area

What are the medical complications of STDs?

The medical complications associated with STDs vary according to the type of infection. For example, when left untreated, chlamydia can lead to infertility in females, while HPV can cause cancer. Untreated syphilis can lead to:

  • Paralysis
  • Mental health issues
  • Heart damage
  • Blindness
  • Death

What are the symptoms?

Depending on the type of STD, symptoms vary greatly and may even be nonexistent until the infection has progressed. General symptoms may include:

  • Vaginal discharge in females
  • Discharge from the tip of the penis in males
  • Pain with urination
  • Generalized pain in the pelvic area for females
  • Swollen glands, body aches, and fever

Who should be tested?

Dr. Polavarapu will do a careful review of your history and symptoms before determining if you require STD testing. Generally, however, sexual activity and habits help determine the need for STD testing. It’s typically recommended, for example, that everyone have HIV testing at least once between the ages of 15-65, and younger if you’re sexually active at an earlier age.

Screening is recommended as frequently as every three months if you have new or multiple sexual partners or if your partner engages in sexual encounters with new or multiple partners. Testing may also be recommended if you are planning to become or are pregnant or use intravenous drugs.
